A Day in the Life of a Novelist

Crud, I woke up an hour after I intended to. Made some coffee and look down at my calendar which looks like I played tug o' war with a raccoon with it. It says I'm supposed to post on Novel Rocket today, which is what I'm doing, albeit late.

Next, I realize I have a 1:30 appt for local Fox radio and am wondering if I'll be done in time to pick up my son across town at 2:30 from school. I'll make it work. I have to. I have 2 books sitting on my counter to be mailed to contest winners. I mailed out 10 yesterday. Shoot, I forgot to write my miles down to and from the post office, they're a write-off (if I can actually remember to keep track of them!)

After writing this post, I have to call Atlanta and speak to a bookstore owner about changing dates of an upcoming signing. We didn't finalize anything and in the meantime a bookclub leader asked to come meet with her group later in the month. I said yes.

After that, I need to follow up on a call to a Nashville bookstore about a signing I was hoping to do there in April.

Email from aspiring writer asking me to mentor her.

Just remembered that I told Books a Million I'd bring them signage for my upcoming Saturday signing. They normally are good about providing it but they're going out of business sometime after my signing so I'm sure they have bigger things on their mind.

I need to go check that the local newspaper has a mention in their community events section. Probably not because I did remember to submit it to their blog, but not to the actual paper. Ug. Write that down.

Email from aspiring writer's friend asking me to mentor him.

I also need to follow up with a local news reporter who asked for my bio and other stuff for his interview with me next week on the morning news (I have to be there at 7:30 in the morning, about the same time my son needs to be at school... I'll worry about that later).

Being featured on the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance this week, I have to do a google search of who posted today so I can go to the blogs and thank them.

Shoot, I'm supposed to update the Novel Rocket Team's books on that sidebar widget thingie. I lost my password ... again.

Come to think of it, I never heard back from a somewhat local Indie store that I'd sent my book to. I wonder if they're going to carry it now. I should just schedule a signing with them and then I know they'll have it. Note to self: call them this morning.

Hey, I woke up but didn't pray or read my Bible. As soon as this post is done, do that.

2 novelists emailed and asked if I would endorse their next book. One is under contract, the other not. I love them both, so I will try.

Why are the dogs whining? Apparently they want to be fed.

Email from aspiring writers mother, asking me if I would mentor her daughter.

I guess at some point today I should work on book 4. I handed it in a few weeks ago and was given 5 single-spaced pages of editorial "suggestions". That book is due in about a month and a half or so.

“Gina Holmes pours her heart onto the page inWings of Glass. . . . If you’ve ever suffered at the hands of someone whose idea of showing love is being abusive, you will find a kindred spirit in Penny Taylor. You’ll also find hope and a gentle but firm call to open your eyes to the truth. Wings of Glass is a powerful, can’t-put-down novel, so real that it reads like a memoir.”
Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times bestselling author of Mine Is the Night

  1. Gina,

I can relate to your brain very much even though my tasks are not all the same as yours. (I wish they were because that would mean I am a successful writer like you, instead of an aspiring writer like me.) :)

Despite all of this, I am pretty sure we are soul sisters. I can't wait to read Wings of Glass! Blessings to you and much grace as you work on book four. :)

  2. Thanks Steph, it's crazy on both sides of this publishing dream.

  3. I am a teacher who has been volunteered to death this year (another way of say administration and other teachers have dumped jobs on me). In addition I am a writer. I have lists for my lists that look as busy as yours. The thing I noticed is that as you were going along you realized you were so busy you forgot to red the Bible and pray. I too often find myself rushing to the point I have to stop to remember to do that. Isn't it glorious that once we do that our day seems to go so much smoother? Lifting your and your busy schedules up in prayer.

  4. Gina,

You are a blessing and an inspiration to so many. Know that we appreciate your commitment to this call in your life.

Thank you for being willing to take on the world - and do it with grace while we all watch...and point...not because we're laughing, but because we're wondering how you keep it all together.

    Be encouraged,
    Becky

  5. Sandra, your lists have lists? ha. That made me laugh. It's true that when I put God first the other things fall into line. I don't know why I'm so slow that I have to be reminded of that again and again (but I do). Prayers always appreciated! Becky, what a sweet thing to say. I AM encouraged. :)
