Writing for a Small Press

By Patty Smith Hall

Patty here, and today, I'd like to welcome my good friend, Cynthia Hickey, publisher of Forget-Me-Know Romance to talk about the advantages of writing for a small press. Cynthia, the floor is yours!

Writing for a Small Press
by Cynthia Hickey

This is my life now. Not only am I an author, but I now run a small press with the help of my husband. A line that my agent so nicely handed me. Smart man. It’s a lot of work. But, it’s also very rewarding in having the opportunity to help authors who don’t necessarily need the help, but want some guidance.

All The Brains Have Fallen Out

by Anita Higman
Best-selling and award-winning author, Anita Higman, has forty books published. She’s been a Barnes & Noble “Author of the Month” for Houston and has a BA in the combined fields of speech communication, psychology, and art. Anita loves good movies, traveling to exotic places, and brunch with her friends.

Well, the book biz has turned itself on its head, and it appears that all the brains have fallen out. What’s an author to do with thirty years in the business when suddenly faced with a digital revolution, closings, cutbacks, mergers, the new age of indie publishing, and book sales as stable as uranium? Well, I’ve decided to venture out into the meadow, hoping not to get shot like Bambi’s Mom.

You can find Anita on her website or her Facebook Reader Page.

Bottom line. I couldn’t keep running my business the same way anymore. I can no longer play it safe. I am choosing to do something fresh and creative—something that I hope will remind me why it is that I fell in love with writing all those years ago.

So, I came up with a five-point plan for my career to help deal with this madly fluctuating state of the book industry.

  1. I have decided to stop writing in my genre—inspirational romance—at least for now. I will be coauthoring novels for young adults with my daughter, Hillary. This YA genre has been calling my name for many years, but I never had the courage to switch over. Until now. We’re hoping these stories of the heart will resonate with a wide audience of readers.
  2. I have gone hybrid—meaning that I will have books coming out through traditional publishers as well as books released through other means. I decided to get the rights back to some of my out-of-print books and give them over to an entrepreneur extraordinaire named Cynthia Hickey. She has republished some of my older books as well as released a few newer works through Forget Me Not Romances, which is the inspirational line through her new company, Winged Publications. Here’s the link: www.forgetmenotromances.com. With Cynthia’s help, I have come to know the joys of being on multiple Amazon best-seller lists.
  3. Prayer. There are many more questions than answers in the publishing industry right now, which can either send you out screaming in the night or bring you to your knees in prayer. I choose the latter. It’s the only sane choice.
  4. I am staying connected to writers and editors through conferences and writer’s loops. I think this is more important than ever—for networking, updates, and support.
  5. Do I still need an agent? Yes. I decided to continue working with an agent for many reasons—career advice, accountability, and of course, because I still needed someone to pitch my work to editors. By the way, I’m happy to say that my agent, Chip MacGregor, is hard-working, business savvy, and he’s supportive of my need to go hybrid.
Through my decades of writing, I have known plenty of failure and changes and dire predictions, but I keep on writing no matter what, because that is what God called me to do. So while the book industry gets its brains back together, you’ll find me faithful at the computer—with perhaps a newer vision—but still very much in love with the art of storytelling.

Summer’s List

A dying wish alters the course of a young woman's life.

Life hadn't been easy for Summer Snow. In acts of selflessness-caring for her ailing parents and running her grandmother's bookstore-she had forfeited her youth and dreams for the needs of others. And the only tries she had at love... didn't turn out. She had the bookstore, she had her beloved granny, but she was missing something-or someone.

Opportunity strikes when Granny sends Summer on an unexpected adventure with one Martin Langtree, a kind but gangly young man from Summer's past. A childhood friendship is rekindled, a romance is sparked, and mysteries are solved in one magical Texas summer. Will Summer strike out on love again, or will things finally go her way?

I CAN’T WRITE!

Multi-published and Best-Selling author Cynthia Hickey had three cozy mysteries and two novellas published through Barbour Publishing. Her first mystery, Fudge-Laced Felonies, won first place in the inspirational category of the Great Expectations contest in 2007. Her third cozy, Chocolate-Covered Crime, received a four-star review from Romantic Times. All three cozies have been re-released as ebooks through the MacGregor Literary Agency, along with a new cozy series, all of which stay in the top 50 of Amazon’s ebooks for their genre. She has several historical romances releasing in 2013, 2014, 2015 through Harlequin’s Heartsong Presents, and has sold more than 260,000 copies of her works. She is active on FB, twitter, and Goodreads. She lives in Arizona with her husband, one of their seven children, two dogs and two cats. She has five grandchildren who keep her busy and tell everyone they know that “Nana is a writer”. Visit her website at www.cynthiahickey.com

My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart 12 turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near. Job 17: 11-12

Writing is a tough business. Someone once told me you can learn the craft of writing, but to be a storyteller is a gift from God.

So, you believe God has called you to write, yet that elusive contract has yet to appear. You’ve studied, attended conferences, sent out proposals, and received rejection after rejection. So many that you are contemplating papering your house with them and calling it quits to writing.

Let’s look at Job. He lost everything: family, wealth, home, friends. Yet, he still believes there is light to come out of the darkness. Most of us have never lost anything close to what Job lost.

I’ve come close to quitting many times, yet the desire to write would never leave me. All I could do was focus on the next word, the next line, the next story. I’ve asked God to remove the desire if it was not His plan for me. The desire never left. The Light continued to shine.

If God truly called you to write, then write. Let Him take care of who reads the words he’s given you. If God has called you to write, then write for Him. He may lead you to traditional publication, He may lead you to independently publishing your work, (which has been a huge success for me) or He may want you to write only for His eyes. But write! Let the light shine from the darkness.

My fifth novel with Harlequin’s Heartsong presents, with six more coming in the following two years. Perseverence and prayer my friends!

Betsy Colter's Heart is On the Line

Betrayed by her soldier fiancĂ©, Betsy takes a job as a Harvey Girl waitress and vows to steer clear of military romance. But soon she's falling for her army pen pal, Dr. Spencer Gregory. When a wounded Spencer returns home and rebuffs her friendship and love, Betsy's deepest fears come true.
Though he's a decorated soldier, Spencer sees himself as a burden—one he won't saddle Betsy with. But keeping her at arm's length is no longer an option when Betsy's former fiancĂ© shows up eager to win her back. If their romance is to survive the war, Spencer must set aside his pride and win her heart.

Reflection:
Has God called you to write or is it something you can walk away from if it never comes to fruition?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to follow Your will. Help me to know whether this desire is mine for worldly success or a calling from You. If it’s my desire, let me be at peace, if it’s Your will, let me follow Your guidance. Amen
