Totally Absorbed

by Nicole Petrino-Salter

                                               Thirsting . . .

Many of you don't care for television. I love the medium. Believe it or not, in an odd way I find TV inspiring. Mostly I watch the crime dramas. I also read an abundance of crime novels, mysteries, thrillers. My favorites.

As with writing novels, the screenwriters must adhere to certain formulas to create 43 minutes of viewing. And, as with writing novels, the tempo must match the particular type of drama. Some series television is versatile, deciding to alternate their formats. Others stick fairly close to their established successful norms and rarely veer off course.

Whether you write for screen or page, you must learn certain facets of the process. Some choose instructional books of which there are plenty, both good and not-so-good. Writing conferences offer multiple classes to teach writers on various rungs of the writing ladder. Many people like to listen and take notes. Some like to record instructions for future reference whenever needed. And then there are those of us who prefer to absorb information, taking infusions - or transfusions - from the repeated reading of fiction or viewing make believe in detailed productions.

Whatever your method, your preference, your genre choices, you're like the roots of a tree absorbing the water, drinking it up and allowing it to hydrate your inspiration. Write on, totally absorbed.
